What Is a Pigtail?
A pigtail is a short length of electrical wire that joins multiple conductors or connects those conductors to a device terminal. The pigtail creates a separate connection point while allowing the circuit conductors to continue through a box. Electricians commonly use pigtails behind receptacles, switches, and other electrical devices.

Key Takeaways About Pigtail
- A pigtail uses a short wire segment for a separate device connection.
- The circuit can continue through the electrical box.
- A pigtail is not the same as a backstab connection.
How Pigtail Works

Pigtail wiring connects a device to circuit conductors through a short, separate wire segment. An electrician joins the matching conductors inside an electrical box, then attaches the pigtail to a receptacle or switch terminal. The circuit conductors remain joined, so the device connection does not depend on the device carrying power onward.

In an outlet installation, the pigtail may connect the receptacle to the hot, neutral, or grounding conductors as appropriate for the circuit. A wirenut or another approved connector holds the joined wires together inside the box. The pigtail must match the circuit wiring and provide a secure terminal connection. This arrangement also supports device replacement without rearranging every conductor in the box.

From the Center Electric Service team
When we install or replace an outlet, we inspect the box wiring before choosing a connection method. We check conductor condition, available space, terminal connections, and grounding continuity. Our team also verifies that the pigtail is secured and arranged so the device fits without stressing the wires.
Pigtail in Practice: A Real-World Example
During an electrical outlet installation, a pigtail can connect the outlet to the circuit’s hot and neutral conductors while those conductors remain joined for another outlet. The electrician places the wire connection inside the electrical box and attaches the short leads to the receptacle.
