What Is a Wire Nut?

A wire nut is an insulated twist-on connector that joins compatible electrical conductors inside an electrical box or enclosure. The connector grips the prepared wire ends through internal threads or a spring. Wire nuts come in different sizes and colors, so the connector must match the wire type, size, and number of conductors.

Key Takeaways About Wire nut

  • Its internal grip holds prepared conductors together.
  • The connector size must match the conductors.
  • A wire nut is not a circuit breaker or terminal block.

How Wire Nut Works

A wire nut connects conductors by twisting the prepared wire ends together inside the connector. Internal threads or a spring press against the conductors and hold the joint in place. The plastic body covers the exposed metal and helps keep the connection contained within an electrical enclosure.

Proper selection depends on the conductor material, wire size, and number of wires in the joint. The conductors must be prepared evenly so the connector can grip them together. A junction box provides the enclosure where the connection is housed, while a pigtail may extend from the joint to a device or terminal.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we work on whole-home rewiring, we inspect each wire nut for a firm connection, suitable sizing, and complete coverage of the prepared conductors. We also check that the splice remains inside an approved enclosure and that the connected wires follow the circuit layout.

Wire nut in Practice: A Real-World Example

During a whole-home rewiring project, a wire nut may join the conductors from a new cable to a pigtail serving a receptacle. The splice stays inside a junction box, where the enclosure protects the connection and keeps the wiring organized.
