What Is Conduit?

Conduit is a protective pathway that houses electrical wires and cables. It may be made from metal or nonmetallic material and can run through walls, ceilings, floors, or outdoor areas. Conduit helps organize conductors, shield them from physical damage, and support orderly routing during new construction or wiring changes.

Key Takeaways About Conduit

  • Its tube-like pathway protects conductors from physical damage.
  • Installers select the material and route for the wiring environment.
  • Conduit is not the same as the wires inside it.

How Conduit Works

Two hands bend conduit and tighten a metal box on a workbench outdoors

Conduit creates a continuous route for insulated conductors between electrical boxes, devices, and equipment. Installers choose a suitable material and shape for the location, then connect sections with fittings. The route must allow the conductors to pass through without damage or excessive strain.

Conduit may remain visible in an unfinished area or sit inside a wall, ceiling, or other finished surface. A pull box or junction box can provide access where the route changes direction or connects with another wiring section. In smart home wiring, conduit can help keep low-voltage communication cables separated from power wiring and easier to manage during system changes.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we plan smart home wiring, we review the route, the surrounding surfaces, and the cable types that need protection. Our team checks conduit connections and access points so wiring can be pulled, identified, and serviced without placing unnecessary strain on the conductors.

Conduit in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner adding a smart doorbell may use conduit to protect the low-voltage cable as it travels through an exposed garage area. The conduit keeps the route organized and shields the cable from accidental contact with stored items.
