What Is a Four-Way Switch?

A four-way switch is an electrical control that changes the path of current between traveler wires in a multi-location lighting circuit. It works with three-way switches to operate one light from several locations. Unlike a standard switch, a four-way switch does not serve as the end control in that circuit.

Key Takeaways About Four-way switch

  • It belongs between three-way switches in a multi-location circuit.
  • Its internal contacts redirect traveler-wire connections.
  • A four-way switch is not the same as a three-way switch.

How Four-way switch Works

A four-way switch changes how traveler wires connect inside a lighting circuit. The switch has paired terminals for incoming and outgoing travelers. Moving the handle changes those connections, which either completes or interrupts the circuit through the other controls.

A four-way switch works between two three-way switches in a multi-location arrangement. The three-way switches sit at the circuit ends, while the four-way switch occupies an intermediate position. Multiple four-way switches may serve the same circuit when a building needs more control locations. Correct operation depends on matching each wire to its circuit role, not simply placing wires on terminals by position.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we inspect a four-way switch, we identify the circuit arrangement and trace each traveler connection before replacing a device. We also check the related three-way switches because a fault at either end can resemble a failed four-way switch. Our team records wire positions before making changes.

Four-way switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A hallway light may need control from the entry, the middle of the hall, and a nearby room. The four-way switch serves the middle location, while three-way switches control the circuit ends.
