What Is a Smart Switch?

A smart switch is a wall-mounted control that operates lighting or other connected loads and communicates with a home network, hub, or voice assistant. Unlike a standard switch, a smart switch can support remote control, schedules, scenes, or automation. Many models also retain physical button control for local operation.

A smart switch sends control signals through a wireless network, a dedicated hub, or a wired control system. The switch operates a connected load after receiving a command from its button, app, schedule, or voice assistant. Local controls can remain available when the network is unavailable, depending on the model.

Installation depends on the existing wiring and the electrical load. Some devices need a neutral wire, while others are designed for different wiring conditions. A neutral wire provides a return path for certain switch electronics. A dimmer switch changes light intensity, while a standard smart switch usually provides on and off control. The connected platform also determines which automations and voice commands are available.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we install a smart switch, we check the existing box, conductors, load, and device compatibility before making connections. We also verify that the switch fits the intended control system and that the wall box can accommodate the device. Our team tests local operation after installation.

Smart switch in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner may use a smart switch to control a porch light from a phone and schedule the light to operate with an evening routine. The wall button still provides ordinary local control when someone enters the home.
