What Is a Dimmer Switch?

A dimmer switch is a wall control that adjusts the electrical power delivered to a compatible light source, allowing you to change light output from brighter to softer. Unlike a standard switch, which provides simple on-or-off control, a dimmer supports adjustable illumination for tasks, comfort, and room atmosphere when the lighting system supports dimming.

  • Lamp and dimmer compatibility affects performance and reliability.
  • A dimmer is not the same as a smart switch.

How Dimmer switch Works

A dimmer switch changes how much electrical power reaches a compatible light source. The control may use a slider, rotary knob, or push button to set the desired brightness. The switch works with the lighting load and wiring arrangement, so the control type must match the fixture and circuit.

Incandescent and halogen lamps often respond differently from LED lamps. An LED driver may need dimming compatibility to prevent flicker, buzzing, limited range, or unexpected shutoff. A dimmer also needs a suitable load capacity and a wiring connection that fits the installation. A standard switch cannot provide the same gradual control.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we install or replace a dimmer switch, we check the fixture type, lamp compatibility, wiring, and control location. We also verify that the circuit responds smoothly across the available range. Our team checks for loose connections and signs that the existing control is not suited to the lighting load.
