What Is an LED Driver?

An LED driver is an electronic power supply that converts incoming electrical power into the controlled voltage or current an LED light source needs. The driver regulates that power to support stable light output and protect the LEDs from electrical changes. Some LED drivers are built into fixtures, while others are separate components.

Key Takeaways About LED driver

  • An LED driver regulates power for LED light sources.
  • Driver type must match the fixture and LED load.
  • An LED driver is not the same as a traditional ballast.

How LED driver Works

A person holds an LED driver on a desk beside pliers, a screwdriver, and a computer monitor

An LED driver receives electrical power from the branch circuit and adjusts it for the connected LED light source. The driver may control voltage, current, or both, depending on the fixture design. This regulated output helps the LEDs produce steady light when the incoming power changes.

Driver design also affects dimming and control features. A dimmable fixture needs a driver that communicates correctly with the dimmer or lighting control. Some fixtures use an integrated driver, while others use a replaceable external unit. A compatible dimmer switch and the correct driver help prevent flicker, limited dimming, or unexpected shutdowns.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we install or troubleshoot LED lighting, we check the driver type, wiring connections, and compatibility with the fixture and control. We also look for signs such as flickering, delayed startup, or inconsistent output. Our team treats the driver as part of the lighting system, not as an interchangeable accessory.

LED driver in Practice: A Real-World Example

A recessed LED fixture installed during a kitchen lighting project may include a remote LED driver above the ceiling. The driver connects to the branch-circuit wiring and supplies controlled power to the fixture, while the wall control adjusts brightness when the components are compatible.
