What Is a Tamper-Resistant Receptacle?
A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle is an electrical outlet with internal shutters that block access to energized contact openings unless a plug applies pressure to both openings at once. The design helps prevent objects from entering one opening alone. It looks similar to a standard receptacle and connects to circuits through ordinary wiring.

Key Takeaways About Tamper-Resistant Receptacle
- Internal shutters distinguish it from a standard receptacle.
- A matching plug opens both shutters during insertion.
- Tamper resistance does not mean ground-fault protection.
How Tamper-Resistant Receptacle Works

A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle contains spring-loaded shutters behind its contact openings. The shutters stay closed when pressure reaches only one opening, such as from a small object. A properly shaped plug applies balanced pressure across both openings, allowing the shutters to move and the blades to reach the contacts.

The receptacle provides tamper resistance through its physical design, not through electronic sensing. A GFCI receptacle serves a different purpose by monitoring current balance and disconnecting power when leakage is detected. A tamper-resistant model may also include GFCI protection, but the two features remain separate. Installation still requires correct wiring, secure terminals, and a properly connected grounding path.

From the Center Electric Service team
When we install or replace a receptacle, we check the device type, wiring connections, grounding path, and faceplate fit. We also check whether the outlet location calls for tamper resistance or another feature, such as GFCI protection. Our team treats those functions as separate parts of the electrical installation.
Tamper-Resistant Receptacle in Practice: A Real-World Example
During an Electrical Outlet Installation in a home, a tamper-resistant model can replace a standard receptacle in a living area. The outlet continues to accept ordinary plugs while its internal shutters stay closed against one-sided object insertion.
