What Is a Test/Reset Button?

A Test/Reset Button is a built-in control on a ground-fault circuit interrupter receptacle that checks and restores the receptacle’s protective function. Pressing Test interrupts power to the receptacle and downstream outlets. Pressing Reset restores power when the device operates normally and the electrical fault condition is no longer present.

Key Takeaways About Test/Reset Button

  • The button belongs to a GFCI receptacle.
  • Test interrupts power, while Reset restores it.
  • Reset is not the same as turning on a circuit breaker.

How Test/Reset Button Works

Test/Reset Button

The Test/Reset Button operates the switching mechanism inside a GFCI receptacle. The Test control creates an internal imbalance that causes the device to interrupt power. This action checks whether the receptacle can respond to a ground-fault condition.

Related glossary terms: Receptacle, Tamper-Resistant Receptacle, Neutral Wire.

The Reset control closes the internal contacts and restores power after a trip. Power may not return if the receptacle still senses a fault, has no incoming power, or has an internal defect. A GFCI receptacle can also protect outlets connected downstream, so one button may affect more than one location.

Practical distinction

Test checks the protective function, while Reset restores the circuit path. A circuit breaker protects wiring from excessive current, but a GFCI button addresses current leaving the intended circuit path.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we inspect a Test/Reset Button, we check whether Test interrupts power and whether Reset restores it. Our team also checks the receptacle connections, upstream power, and downstream outlets when the button will not reset. These checks help separate a device issue from a wider circuit problem.

Test/Reset Button in Practice: A Real-World Example

A bathroom GFCI receptacle has power at the sink outlet but no power at a nearby protected outlet. During GFCI Outlet Installation, the Test/Reset Button helps verify that the receptacle interrupts and restores power across the connected section.
