What Is Load Management?

Load Management is a method of controlling electrical demand so connected equipment stays within the available capacity of a circuit or service. The method may monitor current use, delay a flexible load, or reduce another load when needed. In EV charging, load management coordinates charger operation with the home’s existing electrical demand.

How Load Management Works

Load Management monitors electrical demand and directs selected equipment when available capacity changes. A control system may limit EV charging, pause charging, or allow charging to resume after other equipment stops. The system bases these actions on current conditions within the electrical installation.

For an EV charger, the installation connects the charger controls with information about the home’s electrical load. The charger may operate at a lower level during heavy household use, then increase its charging level when capacity becomes available. This approach differs from load shedding, which focuses on turning selected equipment off, although both methods can manage demand.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we plan EV charger load management, we review the service capacity, panel equipment, charger requirements, and major household loads. We check how the control system will sense demand and confirm that the charger responds properly when other equipment starts or stops.

Load Management in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Riverside home has an electric vehicle charger and several large electrical loads that may operate at the same time. Load management can adjust charger operation during periods of higher household demand, then restore charging when capacity becomes available.
